Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano Could Finally Fight
Undisputed lightweight champion Katie “KT” Taylor (20-0, 6ko) eased past challenger Firuza Sharipova (14-2, 8ko) on December 11. Now she is back on the heels of fighting seven-divisional champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (41-1-1, 30ko) again.
A LOOK BACK
In 2020, the biggest fight in women’s boxing everyone was chomping at the bit to see was Taylor v Serrano. However, Serrano pulled out of the fight citing a pay cut as the main culprit.
“Yes, I signed four contracts to fight Katie Taylor, and despite what lies Eddie Hearn wants to say, he offered us a purse deduction and a change of location. In addition to another date, May 2, July 4 now August 22. My team will handle this. I’m not a toy. I’M DONE WITH THE GAMES!”

Keep in mind, the COVID-19 pandemic had everything in a chokehold as fans were not being allowed in the arena. This severely hampered fight purses. Taylor naturally responded, making it clear that all issues were removed and wanted to move forward with the fight.
“We both signed contracts, all financial barriers have been removed, and any training/travel issues are the same for both of us as I’m training in the US. No more excuses. This is a fight to elevate the sport. August 22 is our time to make history. You in?”

Nonetheless, Serrano opted out of the fight and set her sights on becoming an undisputed champion in the featherweight division. Currently the unified featherweight champion, Serrano has expressed wanting to finally make the fight happen after her victory over the WBC 122-pound champ, Yamileth Mercado.
“I want to become undisputed at featherweight first. I want Katie Taylor for the future…undisputed vs undisputed.”

Of course, Taylor was skeptical about Serrano’s claim, given their history.
“I’ll believe it when I see it, myself.”

WILL WE FINALLY GET THE FIGHT?
Shortly after KT successfully defended the undisputed status against Sharipova, DAZN promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Serrano is the next target.
“The plan is 100% Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden!”
Eddie Hearn – Matchroom Boxing Chairman
“Katie Taylor has taken care of all her obligations. It’s time to make the historic fight next. It’s the fight fans want to see. That fight is the biggest fight in women’s boxing.”
“We were at Madison Square Garden a week ago…they love the fight. Amanda Serrano fights next week, we wish her the best of luck. They now have the contract. They are reviewing the contract. If she wins next week, I’m almost certain, April 2022, you will see Taylor vs Serrano!”
It is music to the ears of the entire boxing community that has been waiting to see this mega-showdown. All that is left is for Serrano to get past Miriam Gutierrez, a former victim of Taylor’s, on December 18.
