Hearn Blames De La Hoya For Not Wanting Zepeda vs Stevenson
Matchroom Boxing’s chairman Eddie Hearn believes Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya won’t allow lightweight William “Camaron” Zepeda (31-0, 27KO) to fight WBC champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (22-0, 10KO). In addition, he stated that now is the perfect time for Camaron to face Fearless, who’s coming off a hand injury.
Hearn took the boxing community by surprise after announcing that Stevenson would be signing to his stable. The New Jersey native has been frustrated with the sport after failing to land a mega-fight with a big name.
Stevenson hopes the British promoter can deliver on landing a showdown with a top name. A fight against top contender Zepeda is the signature fight the WBC champion needs.
HE WON’T MAKE THE FIGHT
While speaking with Fight Hub, Hearn claimed that De La Hoya would prevent Stevenson versus Zepeda from being a reality.
“In my opinion, Zepeda will duck Shakur. It’s his best shot right now. Shakur is coming off a hand operation. He’s going to come straight back into the fight. Zepeda got the warm-up fight against Tevin Farmer, it’s a nice style to gear him up for Shakur. I don’t think Oscar will do it.”
Like it or not, Hearn has a valid point. De La Hoya’s position on the fight has changed. In the beginning, the Golden Boy executive liked the idea of the fight after revealing Zepeda wanted the fight. However, he quickly changed his tune when the WBC ordered Stevenson versus Zepeda.
In fairness De La Hoya expressed wanting his fighter to face WBO champion Denys Barinchyk and Fearless some time down the line. Providing Zepeda captures a title, De La Hoya may look in Stevenson’s direction for unification.
