Hurd may return on the Wilder-Fury under-card against Welborn!
Unified junior middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd marks his return from shoulder surgery for December 1.
The front-runner out of possible candidates is former British Middleweight champion Jason Welborn (24-6, 7KOs). He is riding a four fight win streak after suffering back-to-back losses. His two most recent outings have come against former British champion Tommy Langford; both spit-decision victories.
Interestingly enough, Welborn is not ranked in the top fifteen in either organization Hurd holds belts for (WBA and IBF). Therefore, it remains to be seen if he will defend his titles if the match-up is made.
Additionally, the former British champion has only fought two world-class fighters in Liam Smith and Matthew Macklin; both resulting in defeats.
Previously, 3kingsboxing.com reported Welborn vacating his title after the BBBofC mandated a bout with British standout Mark Heffron. This could be the reason behind his decision to vacate.
If it becomes official, expect nothing more than a tune-up for Hurd to work the ring-rust off. A win here and we’ll likely see him vs WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo sometime in a huge unification bout in the first quarter of 2019.
