WBC Champion Lourdes Juarez Due to Elevate her Career to the Next Level
Women’s boxing is full of fighters who do not receive the shine they deserve. One of which is WBC junior bantamweight champion Lourdes “La Pequena Lulu” (“Little Lulu”) Juarez (34-2, 4 KOs). On June 4, the 35-year-old from Mexico City, Mexico defended that crown for the third time with a unanimous decision (96-94, 98-92×2) win over Debora Vaneza Gomez at the Domo de la Feria in Fresnillo, Mexico. Despite suffering a cut from an accidental headbutt, the defending champ used her experience to take control in the middle rounds and pull away to victory.
ON A ROLL
The win continues an impressive run from Juarez, who is unbeaten since a split-decision setback against Brisa Hernandez in April 2014. What makes Juarez stand out in the ring is her versatility.

In Juarez, you have someone that displays outstanding movement in the ring. She can switch-hit from orthodox to southpaw, often moving in and out of range. It makes her hard to hit with a solid shot. Never considered a puncher, the product of Mexico City uses her boxing skills and elusive style to outslick her foes.
POTENTIAL MATCHUPS
The question now comes: who can she fight next? There are a couple of intriguing opponents that could increase Juarez’s profile.
One potential match is a unification bout against countrywoman and WBA champ Maribel Ramirez (13-9-3, 3 KOs). Another fight of interest could be a battle with current unified flyweight champ Marlen Esparza (12-1, 1 KOs).
While a fight against Ramirez would be for unification, Esparza would be a bigger draw and could bring home a bigger paycheck. The unified champ at 112 is one of the prized fighters on the Golden Boy roster. One would think that Juarez would jump at the opportunity to defend her title against Esparza. She has previously campaigned at flyweight. For the right price, you could envision “Little Lulu” going back down in weight for the spotlight that a fight with Esparza brings.
Can Juarez ever get the notoriety and signature contest that all fighters want? She has the ability to beat anyone at flyweight or junior bantamweight. But time waits for no one in this sport, especially someone of her age and years in the ring. If she wants to raise her stock, she has to make her move and do so now.
