Inoue Likely Aiming for 3rd Division Title Against McDonnell

Naoya Inoue vs Jamie McDonnell likely for May

WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell and WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue are currently in negotiations for a possible bout. The fight would likely take place in Japan later this spring or early summer with May being the target.

McDonnell’s promoter Eddie Hearn said previously that McDonnell would likely move up to super bantamweight but a fight of this magnitude would keep him at 118lbs. Hearn had this to say about the negotiations earlier:

“Jamie originally planned to move up after the Liborio Solis fight but this is a huge fight and he loves the idea of the challenge,” Hearn told Sky Sports.

“Inoue has looked devastating at super-fly and it’s a tough fight for Jamie, but he wants to test himself against the very best out there”

“I’m hoping we can close this week.”

After back to back losses earlier in his career McDonnell has strung together twenty-one wins in a row since 2008. He is also UK’s longest-standing world champion and would be making the seventh defense of his title that he won in 2014.

Inoue would be aiming for his third division title in just his 16th professional fight. The man known as “The Monster” has defended his WBO title seven times. Inoue and has knocked out 13 of his 15 opponents.
