Julian “J-Rock” Williams’ Next Opponent Set
IBF/WBA super welterweight champion Julian Williams (27-1, 16KOs) will get the home fight he’s been looking for. The unified champion will be fighting Jeison Rosario (19-1-1, 13KOs) on January 18, 2020 at Temple University’s Liacouras Center. The fight will air on FOX Sports.
Julian Williams is coming off of an upset win over former unified champion Jarrett Hurd back in May. Williams was looking forward to a possible rematch with Hurd but, the former champ has opted to look elsewhere for the time being. Jeison Rosario is probably most known for his loss to Nathaniel Galimore by knockout. He has since won eight of his nine last bouts, with one draw. Rosario has also recorded notable wins over Jorge Cota and Justin DeLoach since his lone defeat.
Julian Williams was actively looking at some bigger names but, the current landscape wasn’t really amicable to that. Jermell Charlo and Tony Harrison had their rematch delayed due to an ankle injury for Harrison. They’re now scheduled for December 22. Williams and his team also reached out to Jaime Munguia and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. These two options were extreme long shots, as the PBC and Golden Boy have a poor relationship.
Canelo has since moved on to light heavyweight and defeated IBF champion Sergey Kovalev. Munguia, who currently holds the WBO piece of the super welterweight title, is scheduled to fight January 26, 2020 with no opponent named. Williams vs Rosario will put the winner on schedule to fight in a unification in the summer of 2020, most likely with the winner of Harrison vs Charlo.
