Jarrett Hurd Wants Jermell Charlo After Luis Arias Bout

When Jarrett “Swift” Hurd (24-1, 16 KO’s) next steps into the ring he will do so at middleweight. Yet the former unified junior middleweight champion assures that it will only be a one and done. Following the fight, he has every intention on returning to his native junior middleweight division. The only reason that he is fighting at 160 pounds now is because he thought it would be foolish to try to cut a massive amount of weight unnecessarily.

It has long been known that, in between fights, he swells up in weight. When Hurd slides through the ropes to face Luis Arias (18-2-1, 9 KO’s) June 6, he will have been out of action for nearly a year and half. Hurd admitted to going north of two hundred pounds during that time. So rather than murder his body getting back to 154 pounds, he thought it to be more prudent to make a quick pitstop at 160.

TALK IS CHEAP, SHOW ME!

Like any confident fighter, Hurd predicts he will be able to get past his next assignment without much issue. He has heard the tough talk of Arias but remains unfazed as he told Fight Hype.

“Think about this, that’s his game. He likes to talk but it’s all about action. See if he goes out there and do the things he speaks on. He always says he has this unknown power, he hits harder than everyone and he hits this hard, he hits that hard. But when he goes out there he only has nine knockouts. We don’t see the power.”

“So anybody can talk a good game but we going to see what he do on fight night!”

GIVE ME BABY BRO!

Provided that he makes good on his soothsaying and defeats Arias, Swift knows exactly who he would want to face directly after. Down in his native junior middleweight division there is an important fight brewing to crown an undisputed champion. On July 17, WBA, IBF and WBC champion Jermell “Hit Man” Charlo (34-1, 18 KO’s) will face WBO champion Brian “El Boxi” Castano (17-0-1, 12 KO’s) for all the marbles. Yet win, lose or draw, Hurd makes it very clear he wants to dance with Charlo directly after.

“I’m praying, I’m hoping and I want Jermell Charlo to win that fight so bad, man! Because no matter what, if he do lose to Castano, I still want to fight him but it will be on a different platform if he have all the belts. So I’d rather him win the fight.”

“I got him winning the fight. I’m not sure by stoppage because Castano is a good fighter. But I want him to win because I want to be the one. He got to see me!”

It will be interesting to see how the Charlo versus Castano bouts plays out. It will also be revealing to see if the Hit Man reciprocates any mutual feeling about facing Hurd. Yet, first Swift must be careful not to take Arias too lightly.

It has long been known one of the easiest ways to lose in boxing is looking past the man standing directly in front of you! So let’s wait and see what the future holds for them all.
