Jeff Mayweather Lacks Confidence in Devin Haney Beating George Kambosos in Australia
To be great, you must be willing to do things that make you uncomfortable, even if you have people who believe in you. There are also people that are skeptical and doubtful of the goals being reached. WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney (27-0, 15KOs) takes on unified champion George Kambosos (20-0, 10KOs) in their undisputed championship bout in Australia on June 5. He has a number of detractors out there, whether it’s his peers in boxing, fight fans or trainers that have trained him at one point in his career.
Haney is the betting favorite heading into this fight. Most people see it as being a very tough night of action for the young, unbeaten champion. In particular, his former trainer, Jeff Mayweather. In an interview with Fighthype, he expressed doubt that Haney would defeat Kambosos in Australia unless by knockout.
“I used to train him, I used to train Haney. I think he has a good chance of winning the fight, but he’s not going to win in Australia. He’s not going to win in Australia, unless he knocks him out, and that’s the one thing he doesn’t have. He doesn’t have knockout power. But anything can happen in a fight, but if it goes to a decision, I don’t think he’s going to win.”
He went on to further say that a potential loss would not solely be because of boxing politics but also because Kambosos is a tough fighter.
“Kambosos is a guy that can actually fight too. He’s not going to go in there and laydown for anybody, and I think he showed that with Teofimo (Lopez). At that time I thought Teofimo was the best guy in that division, but Kambosos showed me different. So I think that if you don’t beat him soundly, where it’s almost a knockout or you win every round. No way you’re going to get a decision over there, no way.”
The comments made by Jeff Mayweather drew the ire of Haney, who responded, via social media, labeling his former trainer as “a fucking hater”. Come June 5, I’m sure Haney will look to make all his naysayers eat their words, especially his former trainer.
