Jerwin Ancajas Returns to Face Jonathan Rodriguez

IBF Junior Bantamweight Champion Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas (31-1-2, 21KO) will finally make his return to the ring. His comeback bout will be against Jonathan Javier Rodriguez (21-1, 15KO).!

Normally the lower weight division isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. However, over the last couple of years, there seems to be renewed interest in the divisions and the hard-punching champion has played a huge role in that.

The 27-year old Filipino southpaw has been eager to get an unification bout with any of the other champions. This is praiseworthy, him being in arguably one of the toughest divisions in boxing.3kingsboxing reported that the targeted fighters for an October return were hopefuls former world champion Carlos Cuadras and top contender Andrew Moloney. In boxing, things doesn’t always go according to plan. So for now, the boxing community will have to settle on the #14 ranked challenger.

Rodriguez, a 24-year old Mexican fighter, has never faced anyone the caliber of the champion. Therefore, this will either be a huge mismatch or a surprise upset. Before dismissing this fight off, already marking down the W, remember we’ve seen guys with nothing to lose but everything to gain perform well in these situations. Lineal champion Tyson Fury can attest to that when he had to dig deep against underdog Otto Wallin.

INTERESTING FACTS

Rodriguez will be making a first time appearance in the United States, as well as fighting for the first career title opportunity.

Ancajas will be making a fourth appearance in the US and the eighth defense of the title.

If victorious, be looking for Pretty Boy to aggressively seek a unification bout sometime in 2020.

The scheduled contest is on target for the Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA on November 2.
