Jesse Rodriguez Calls Out Sunny Edwards for a Flyweight Unification Fight!

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11 KOs) is quickly becoming the epicenter of the flyweight division. The 23-year-old from San Antonio, Texas has one goal in mind, which is to become a unified champion. The number one target on his hitlist is reigning IBF 112-pound champion Sunny Edwards (18-0, 4 KOs).

The Texan is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Cristian Hernandez Gonzalez to capture the vacant WBO flyweight title. With the win, Rodriguez is now a two-division champion. During the post-fight interview with DAZN, Bam was clear on who he would like to fight next.

“Sunny Edwards, that’s the only option. He’s been talking a lot. So, let’s make it happen.”

HUNGRY TO FACE ONE ANOTHER

The Rodriguez camp and Edwards have recently had their share of back-and-forth exchanges on social media. After signing with Matchroom Promotions, Edwards went public with his desire to fight Bam. He even claimed that Rodriguez turned down an offer to fight him. That claim was refuted by Rodriguez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, who stated they are more than willing to face the IBF champion. However, that possible unification match may not happen as quickly as many observers would like. Bam revealed after his fight with Gonzalez that he believes he suffered a broken jaw.

Both fighters are under the Matchroom umbrella and want the fight. Company chairman Eddie Hearn seems interested in making it a reality. At this point, the matchup is a distinct possibility later this year or early in 2024.
