Jo Jo Diaz and Abner Mares trade words on social media!
Months after becoming the new IBF Junior Lightweight champion with an impressive win over former champion and rival Tevin Farmer (30-5-1, 6KOs) Joesph “Jo Jo” Diaz (31-1, 15KOs), has turned his attention on four-division world champion Abner Mares (31-3-1, 15KOs).
Diaz took to Twitter declaring that he wanted to retire Mares. Mares hasn’t fought since June of 2018, where he lost a unanimous decision in a rematch against Leo Santa Cruz.
Plagued recently by a detached retina that put his career in jeopardy, the former multi-weight champion is more than willing to return against Diaz. Mares even went as far as to proclaim that a fight with Diaz would be nothing more than a fight that would prepare him for the big fights.
Both men are from California. They also both have fan-friendly styles that would surely have the potential to produce an all-out action slugfest. For Mares, it would be a chance to become a champion again. For Diaz, a win over Mares would give him his most significant victory yet in his career.
Would Golden Boy and PBC be willing to work together to make such a match-up come to fruition? That’s hard to call but if the fighters want it, why not make it happen?
One potential roadblock is Tevin Farmer, who has a rematch clause I’m sure he’s going to exercise so he can attempt to get his IBF strap back.
