John Ryder Willing and Ready to Step-in for Billy Joe Saunders vs Canelo Alvarez
A former foe of WBO super middleweight champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14KOs) is ready and willing to step in and replace him vs Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (55-1-2, 37KOs) on May 8. WBA #6, WBC #7 and WBO #15 rated middleweight contender John “The Gorilla” Ryder (29-5, 16KO) has declared his willingness to step-in as a late replacement for a run at the WBA and WBC titles!
As 3kingsboxing.com reported earlier, the father of the WBO champion, Tom Saunders declared the highly anticipated unification fight was off! The reason due to that of the ring being too small for team Saunders to agree to a fight. While people aren’t really taking this threat seriously, Saunders was noticeably absent from the press conference.
IS RYDER A WORTHY REPLACEMENT?!
Many people will yawn at the thought of Alvarez facing anyone other than Saunders on May 8. While clearly a couple levels below both super middleweight champions, Ryder’s a guy who has a great argument that he should’ve been crowned the WBA “super” champion back when he fought former champion Callum Smith in November of 2019.
At 32 years of age, the British contender has been seeking another big fight since his somewhat controversial decision loss to Smith. Will he get his next big opportunity against Alvarez? Time will tell. Hopefully cooler heads prevail and some type of concession can be made.
For what it’s worth, Ryder was flying out to Dallas, Texas anyway to start promoting his upcoming WBA regular super middleweight title bout against David Morrell (4-0, 3KOs). This is still a fight he thinks he will be involved in as he believes Saunders is just posturing and fully intends to fight Canelo.
