Cherneka Johnson Wants Shurretta Metcalf & Dina Thorslund

WBA bantamweight champion Cherneka “Sugar” Johnson (17-2, 7KO) wants to fight either IBF champion Shurretta Metcalf (14-4-1, 2KO) or unified champion Dina Thorslund (23-0, 9KO) next.

Sugar was dominant in the rematch against former champion Nina Hughes. There was controversy in the first showdown, but Johnson put all that noise to rest by stopping Hughes. She fought at a furious pace, landing hard shots and hurt the British fighter several times. After taking more hard shots, Hughes’s corner threw in the towel in the seventh round.

With this fight behind her, the path for undisputed can now begin. During the post-fight interview, she wasted no time expressing a desire to collect the belts.

“I obviously want to collect all of those belts. So, whichever one is available next, I’m happy to fight for.”

Metcalf is coming off a rematch victory over two-divisional champion Miyo Yoshida in 2024. If they were to fight next, this author believes Johnson would walk away as a unified champion.

This would set up an undisputed showdown with Thorslund. The unified champion is a very good fighter who looks to be unstoppable. She can box and has decent movement which could be a problem for Johnson.

Thorslund has only fought outside of her country of Denmark once so it will be interesting to see if Team Johnson can lure her to the United Kingdom.
