Jono Carroll Returns To the Ring August 11 On ESPN+

Former world title challenger Jono Carroll (18-1-1, 4KOs) will step back into the ring on August 11. He will face Maxi Hughes (20-5-2, 4 KO) in a scheduled ten-round bout at a catchweight of 133lbs. Carroll – Hughes is the main event of an MTK Global card to be held at a private closed-door facility in Wakefield, England, and will air on ESPN+ in the United States.

Currently ranked 7th by the IBF at 130 pounds, Carroll has been on a roll since suffering a hard-fought decision defeat to then IBF Jr. Lightweight champion Tevin Farmer in March 2019.

The 28-year-old has followed that setback with impressive victories over Eleazar Valenzuela and Scott Quigg. His win over Quigg stands out in particular as he not only dominated and stopped the former WBA Jr. Featherweight champion in eleven rounds, he sent his rival into retirement.

Hoping for a big name at either 130 or 135 pounds following his victory over Quigg, the southpaw from Dublin, Ireland’s plans were derailed as he and the sport at large are adjusting to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Hughes is a fighter with a workman-like style. The 30-year-old southpaw from Yorkshire, England is solid and sturdy.

But based on film observation of both fighters, Carroll will be the heavy favorite going in. This fight has the look of a stepping stone towards what the Irishman hopes is another world title fight down the road.
