Benavidez Sr. Says Canelo vs Benavidez Won’t Happen This Year

Father and trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. has never been shy about calling out undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) for not wanting to fight his son, “The Mexican Monster” David Benavidez (28-0, 24KO). Furthermore, he believes Canelo will continue to do whatever it takes to avoid making the fight.

One of the biggest fights in boxing that fans want to see is Canelo versus The Mexican Monster. In 2023, Team Benavidez spent the bulk of the year proving why they deserve a shot at the undisputed crown. After annihilating two-division champion Demetrius Andrade, Team Benavidez picked up heavy momentum going into 2024.

Several boxing pundits and fans believe the undisputed champion can’t ignore the two-time WBC champion any longer. Yet, fights with Jaime Munguia or Jermall Charlo seem to be more of a priority for Team Alvarez over facing Benavidez.

THEY WON’T FIGHT THIS YEAR

A frustrated Benavidez Sr. explained to Fight Hub TV, why boxing fans shouldn’t expect the fight to happen in 2024.

“To be honest with you, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Canelo does not want anything to do with David. Every time he comes up with all the excuses, all the time. But look who he wants to fight. He wants to fight Munguia, he wants to fight Charlo.”

“He’ll do anything, or his team will do anything to stay away from David . . . I’m just praying to God that the commissions be fair to everybody. I mean David’s the mandatory, and they’re supposed to strip him in March if he didn’t get the fight with David.”

The Mexican Monster has earned the right to face Canelo, and the boxing community should be demanding the fight take place next. There a growing number of fans and pundits that believe Benavidez has Alvarez’s number. Canelo’s legacy is in danger of taking a hit if he doesn’t fight the two-time WBC champion.
