Anthony Joshua Stops Prenga to Keep Tyson Fury Fight Alive

Two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (30-4, 27 KOs) paved the way toward a Tyson Fury showdown. He scored a dramatic second-round knockout over Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, Joshua’s victory was anything but convincing.

A MAJOR SCARE

It was a nightmare start for Joshua, who was dropped just 20 seconds into the fight. Still visibly shaken, AJ was knocked down again later in the opening round and survived to the bell. For a brief moment, one of boxing’s biggest potential fights appeared to be slipping away.

Then Prenga’s (20-2, 20 KOs) inexperience became evident. Rather than pressing his advantage against a hurt opponent, Prenga eased off the attack. This allowed Joshua valuable time to recover. Once Joshua regained his composure, the gulf in skill and experience quickly became apparent.

In the second round, Joshua’s superior technique and punching power took over. He stunned Prenga before finishing the job with a crushing knockout. It completed one of the more dramatic momentum swings in recent heavyweight memory.

JOSHUA ON SHAKY GROUND

Following the victory, Joshua made it clear that his attention is now fully focused on a fight with Fury. While that fight remains a massive attraction, Joshua’s performance against Prenga raises significant questions. Being dropped twice by a fringe contender will intensify concerns about his durability. His punch resistance will be heavily questioned.

The money and public demand should still ensure that Joshua and Fury finally meet. However, many fans will enter that fight viewing Joshua as a clear underdog. They believe Fury has the tools to capitalize on the vulnerabilities Prenga exposed.
