Martinez Could Rematch Roman Gonzalez At Super Flyweight

One-time WBC flyweight champion “El Rey” Julio Cesar Martinez (21-3, 15KO) has officially vacated the title and will return to the super flyweight division. In addition, he could look for revenge in a rematch against multi-divisional champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (51-4, 41KO).

The boxing news cycle is buzzing with word that El Rey has relinquished the title. Martinez is coming off a successful title defense by majority decision victory over Angelino Cordova on March 30.

The Mexican offered a statement to the WBC organization, which is posted on their website:

“After careful reflection, I vacated the flyweight title to pursue new opportunities at super flyweight. This step will allow me to continue growing as a boxer and face new challenges. I am very grateful to the WBC for their support throughout my career.”

The organization expressed a desire to help Martinez in any future endeavors in the super flyweight division.

“The WBC and its President Mauricio Sulaimán wish Rey Martínez the best of success and reiterate that doors are open for this new adventure in the super flyweight division.”

Martinez could skip the line with a generous ranking within the top 5. With WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada taking on number one contender Jesse Rodriguez, it leaves the door open for a Martinez versus Gonzalez rematch, possibly for the interim title.

When the two fighters first met in 2022, the number two-ranked contender, Chocolatito, schooled El Rey in a one-sided beatdown. Fast forward to now, Gonzalez is much older and hasn’t fought since losing to Estrada in December 2022.

In addition, he has been in some wars as Father Time seems to be catching up with him. If Martinez wants revenge, now is the perfect time to press for the rematch.
