George Kambosos Is Already Looking Ahead to a Fight Against Vasyl Lomachenko!
When it comes to confidence, unified 135-pound champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos (20-0, 10KOs) is full of it. The Australian champion will be putting his titles on the line in front of his hometown crowd on June 5 against WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (27-0, 15KOs) in an undisputed showdown.
While fans are eagerly awaiting June 5, Ferocious is already looking forward to his next ring assignment. Prior to him and Haney agreeing to fight each other, Kambosos was reportedly set to face former unified lightweight champion Vasyl “Loma” Lomachenko (16-2, 11KOs). However, after his home country of Ukraine came under attack by Russia, he decided to shift his focus to helping his fellow countrymen and women. In doing so, he passed up the chance to reclaim the titles he lost to former champion Teofimo Lopez in October 2020.
CONFIDENCE, ARROGANCE, OR ENTERTAINMENT?
In a recent interview with Fight Hype, when Kambosos was asked what keeps him motivated, he had the following to say:
“The way I stay on top of my game is I keep fighting the best of the best. That’s why, and I’m a man of my word, and I said it. Lomachenko, obviously, that fight was done. He has a bigger fight to take place at the moment. So Devin Haney stepped up and took the contract and accepted it, which is fantastic. And we will not only fight for my belts, but for his secondary belt, his pride belt, that obviously my good friend Mauricio stated. So I can’t wait. That’s another belt to add to the collection. I’ll add that to the collection, and what a collection it will be. But the way I stay motivated, hungry, and inspired to do great things is to fight the best guys. So Lomachenko, straight after Haney, will be next. That’s the fight I will fight.”
Hearing that statement will either make you appreciate the supreme confidence Kambosos has in himself or make you think this guy is delusional enough to be overlooking Haney, who poses a major threat to his title reign. Its unknown if Kambosos believes what he’s saying or not. However, he’s certainly carrying his weight in promoting this fight with his eye-catching statements.
Regardless, Kambosos’ full attention should be on Haney as he knows the type of fighter he’s going to be facing. However, if he’s indeed truly looking ahead to a potential bout with Lomachenko, Ferocious could find himself in a similar position to former champion Teofimo Lopez; bitter with his first loss and his titles no longer in his possession. We shall see on fight night.
