The Juan Francisco Estrada v Roman Gonzalez Trilogy Fight Remains Elusive

WBA Super super flyweight champion “El Gallo” Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3, 28KOs) was given the ever confusing WBC franchise title in order to make the trilogy fight with four-division champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (50-3, 41KOs). The boxing community was ready to see these two rivals settle their even wins in the anticipated trilogy. However, fans are now left to wonder when or if the trilogy fight takes place. The boxing gods struck again after health concerns for El Gallo forced him out of the trilogy fight.

Gonzalez would carry-on fighting by facing WBC flyweight champion “El Rey” Julio Cesar Martinez on March 5. Chocolatito put on a performance that can only be described as an old lion showing the young lion the difference in levels.

Back in February, the WBO ordered Estrada to fight WBA Regular champion Joshua Franco in an attempt to consolidate belts. It seems that the situation has not been settled, moving the anticipated trilogy fight back even more. Both sides were unable to reach an agreement. Therefore, to the dismay of boxing fans, the WBA has now ordered a purse bid for April 18.

Reaching a deal before the deadline would only be the first step in getting this match on track. Afterwards, the fight itself could take another two or three months before it happens. Moreover, Gonzalez may choose to fight newly crowned WBC champion Jesse Rodriguez, and a victory would set up an even bigger trilogy fight.

Until things start to come to some form of clarity, the boxing community is waiting in limbo, praying that the trilogy fight happens at some point.
