Kelvin Davis Is Self-assured He Can Dethrone Alberto Puello

This November 8, welterweight prospect Kelvin “Nite Nite” Davis (13-0, 7 KO’s) will answer the call of duty for his fourteenth professional match. On that date he will test his might against Yeis Gabriel Solano. Yet, if given his way, he’d much rather be mixing it up with WBC junior welterweight champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello (23-0, 10 KO’s).

In a recent Q&A with Fight Hype, Davis was anything but bashful when revealing who he’d like to face in the ring.

“Of course, I want a champion, but they are rotating belts so much, by the time I am there I don’t know who is going to have it. Teo [Teofimo Lopez], Rayo [Jose Valenzuela], Puello, oh yeah! Give me Puello! I’ll kill Puello – take that belt right up off of him!”

“I know I can beat him. Don’t got nothing to do with who he fought or how he looked. I know I can beat him, just straight like that. If you know, you know. I was up in they gym [and] he ain’t want to spar, either. Yeah, I am up in they gym and they didn’t want to spar. They acting all scary!”

Although he has campaigned as a welterweight for his past two fights, Night Night has functioned as a junior welterweight for the majority of his professional career. Obviously, he’s letting it be known that it would not be an issue to return back to 140 for the right fight. However, the trouble for Davis is that he is not ranked at 147 or 140. Furthermore, he is more famous for being Keyshawn Davis’ brother than for his own in-ring exploits.

On the flipside, Puello narrowly defeated Gary Antuanne Russell three months ago to capture the WBC Interim title. Since this widely viewed battle, Puello has been elevated to the full champion. While no date has been set, Puello and his backers have agreed to terms to face #1(WBC) and #5 (WBO) ranked Sandor Martin next.

So, while there is little doubt that Kelvin Davis has the proper incentive to dance with Puello, the question is: does the WBC champion feel the same way? At the current moment it would seem not. Yet, since both have other assignments coming up anyway, now would be the proper time for Davis to fill out his resume and add a few more exciting moments to his highlight reel!
