Canelo Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev now in doubt?
Another twist in the soap opera of “Finding Canelo Avarez An Opponent” could be returning to the boxing headlines.
After overcoming an eighth round scare against the previously unbeaten Anthony Yarde, WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev prevailed with an 11 round KO to retain his WBO light heavyweight title.
Next up is Canelo Alvarez right? Not so fast! Apparently Kovalev is having second thoughts about the fight due to a two and a half month turn around. After a grueling title defense, a bout with an elite fighter like Alvarez may be a little taxing.
Therefore, it’s understandable Kovalev would want more time to recover maximizing his chances at victory.
Money Talks
While the logical thing would be for the bout to take place in December giving him more time, we all know “money talks” and Canelo brings a lot of it! Being 36 years-old with a wealth of young guys gunning for his title, it may be wise to roll the dice, earn a huge payday and potentially pull off a huge victory.
For Canelo, if he fails to secure a Kovalev fight, he may be forced to deal with a guy in Demetrius Andrade who has been hell bent on getting the Mexican star in the ring for the last six years!
It appears that the walls are closing in on Canelo and his preference of opponents.
