Michael Hunter vs Sergey Kuzmin set for September
Former Cruiserweight world title challenger and current heavyweight contender Michael Hunter (17-1, 12KO) and current rising heavyweight Sergey Kuzmin (15-0, 11KO) will meet in September according to Matchroom Boxing Director Eddie Hearn.
Kuzmin is a highly skilled and unbeaten heavyweight from Russia. He is known for his two knockout victories over former Olympic bronze medalist David Price and divisional tough-guy, Amir Mansour. The fight with the latter was later changed to a “no contest” due to a positive test from Mansour.
All the same, however, he will be a significant underdog heading into this fight.
Hunter is also very skilled fighter n his own right, although, he’s undersized for the division. His hand speed and athleticism make him a threat to anybody in the division. Just ask former cruiserweight undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk how tough he is. He gave the cruiserwieght king aruguably one of his toughest fights of his career although he was coming off an eleven month layoff!
He is also under the guidance of Former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman serves as his trainer.
Hunter is ranked in the top fifteen in all four major sanctioning bodies. Meanwhile, Kuzmin is ranked only by the IBF and WBA. Therefore, this bout may not serve as one that will get either a shot a title, but will help the winner shift his position in the rankings.
Needless to say, this is an important fight for both men. Each is looking to put their names in the mix for bigger fights on their way to a title opportunity!
