Team Uzcategui is furious with the reinstatement of Lawson
The uncle/trainer for Andre Dirrell, Leon Lawson, was placed on indefinite suspension for sucker punching Jose Uzcategui in the aftermath of their first fight that ended in a disqualification win for Dirrell.
In May of 2017, Uzcategui lands a powerful right had as the bell sounded to end the eighth round. This ultimately led to a reprimand and disqualification.
Lawson proceeded to approach the opposing corner in a friendly manner, however, he instead attacked Uzcategui .
The decision by the Maryland State Athletic Commission allows Lawson in the corners of the Dirrell brothers for future bouts.
Team Uzcategui is livid about this decision which presented no reasonable explanation.
Sean Gibbons, a representative of Uzcategui had this to say:
“When we saw it and I had it forwarded to me by a person, the state of Maryland didn’t even have the decency to let us know or anyone from his team know that they were letting this guy off suspension, which his insane.”
For now, the decision will have no effect on the newly crowned IBF champion. He returns September 28 in a non-title bout against Ezequiel Maderna in Oakland, California on ESPN.
