Delgado Needs More Fights Before Facing Hitchins
In a junior welterweight showdown, undefeated Lindolfo Delgado (23-0, 16KO) is not ready to face IBF champion Richardson Hitchins (19-0, 7KO).
On April 5, Delgado got all he could handle in a title eliminator against Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez. The Mexican applied effective pressure early in the fight, landing hard right hands on the head and body. His footwork, speed, and punch accuracy keep Rodriguez on the defense.
Yet, The Dominican Kid roared back with counter shots that hurt Delgado. He managed to land a two-punch combination that almost put the Mexican on the canvas. In the end, one judge scored it 95-95, with two scoring it in Delgado’s favor 96-94.
Looking at what’s next is a possible shot at Hitchins for the title, and based on this fight, Delgado isn’t ready just yet. Hitchins is fighting at a different level and is a far better boxer than Rodriguez.
Hitchins’ speed, movement, and ring IQ are a huge problem for Delgado. In addition, he would use that long-reach advantage to control the fight behind a consistent jab.
Team Delgado may want to take another fighter before looking to take on Hitchins for the title.
