Oscar De La Hoya Throws Teofimo Lopez a Lifeline
Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) is arguably the best fighter currently at junior welterweight. He’s also one of the most talked-about fighters in the sport. He’s also someone who is in danger of wrecking his career. Lucky for him, it appears that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya wants to work with him. It’s the lifeline that the reigning WBO junior welterweight champion needs to restore his sordid reputation.
It’s known throughout the boxing community that the 27-year-old has not been shy to express himself. However, many argue that recent actions and comments have gone above and beyond the pale.
There were Lopez’s recent comments referring to Turki Alalshikh as a dictator, something he eventually apologized for. Additionally, some in the boxing community are accusing Lopez of bigotry in light of his constant referring to Black American fighters. He called IBF champion Richardson Hitchins and two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford “monkeys and gorillas.” Despite the cloud of controversy over Lopez, De La Hoya has publicly expressed an interest in signing the 27-year-old.
Over the years, the temperamental fighter has spent plenty of time feuding with promoters and networks. Signing with Golden Boy could be the last chance for The Takeover to remain a viable mainstream attraction.
