Three division champion decides where he’ll pursue his career
P4P sensation Vasyl Lomachenko, who is fresh off a superb performance in which he beat Jorge Linares to win the WBA lightweight title, has decided to vacate his WBO super featherweight belt. The decision really comes as no surprise with word of a possible lightweight unification bout with Ray Beltran being worked on.
Lomachenko picked up the WBO title when he defeated Rocky Martinez back in 2016. The Ukrainian defended the title four times with the last defense coming against Guillermo Rigondeaux back in December.
Lomachenko will return to the ring on August 25th in Los Angeles according to his promoter Bob Arum. As previously mentioned, his opponent is expected to be WBO lightweight champion Beltran.
It would give Lomachenko an opportunity he didn’t have in the two previous division’s he was champion as he would be trying to become a unified champion. It’s not necessarily THE fight (Lomachenko vs Mikey Garcia) fans are wanting but it is arguably the next best thing.
The WBO will likely make a decision soon as to who will fight for the now vacant belt.
