Lomachenko Wins The Battle Of Double Gold Medalists
In the main event of Top Rank on ESPN from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City Vasyl Lomachenko( 9-1, 7 KO’s)put his WBO Super Featherweight Championship on the line against Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KO’s) in a 12 round bout. This is the first time in the history of the sport two 2x Olympic gold medalists met in the ring. Both men came in with something to prove as both are highly touted technicians and consider by most the two most skilled fighters in the sport.
The first round started slow with both men feeling each other out and neither one did much. In the second round Lomachenko stepped up the pace a little bit landing shots in spots and trying to control the pace of the fight. The third looked like more of the second with Rigondeaux not doing much on offense and the speed and athleticism of Lomachenko giving Rigondeaux some issues. In the fourth it was all Lomachenko who seemed to be toying with Rigondeaux at times. Lomachenko looked to be just too fast for Rigondeaux who didn’t seem to have many answers.
In the fifth it was Lomachenko’s offense in spots with a lot of holding from Rigondeaux and Lomachenko hit Rigondeaux with a shot after the bell. In the sixth round Loma went on the offense some more turning and landing punches while Rigo was deducted a point for holding. Rigondeaux quit on his stool in between rounds as he just didn’t seem to have an answer for Lomachenko at all.
Lomachenko showed his skills toying with Rigondeaux and shutting up Rigo for good.Rigondeaux claimed hehad an injured hand but it looked like it was Rigo looking for a way out. Lomachenko came out to prove a point and did it!!
