Luke Campbell not sold on Haney or Garcia
Former Olympic gold medalist Luke “Cool Hand” Campbell (20-3, 16ko) isn’t sold on neither the WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream Haney (24-0, 15ko) or #3 ranked Ryan “The Flash” Garcia (20-0, 17ko).
Campbell has been on a whirlwind over a year, going from signing to face “The Dream” for the then-vacant WBC championship, to stepping into the ring with arguably top pound for pound boxer Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10ko) for the vacant title.
Furthermore, he was all set to face former champion Javier Fortuna (35-2-1, 24ko) for the vacant WBC title when “The Dream” was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Those plans fell through due to the current pandemic canceling the world. After that, it was ruled by the WBC that Campbell and Fortuna will fight for the mandatory slot. However, again, COVID-19 interrupted that.
Now it seems he will face Golden Boy Promotions top prospect Garcia for that same mandatory spot.
The former Olympic gold medalist also shared the ring with well-respected then WBA/Ring champion Jorge “El Nino de Oro” Linares (47-5, 29ko) back in 2017.
Despite losing both title bouts, Campbell was competitive and showed an above-average IQ. Some even believe he possibly should have gotten the nod in the Linares bout.
It is safe to say “Cool Hand” has been tested and has passed the eye test.
THE JURY IS STILL OUT
Now, with all that first-hand experience, it shouldn’t surprise anyone the British boxer isn’t sold on either Haney or Garcia.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Luke Campbell gave his thoughts on both of the more popular American fighters.
“It’s hard to see what they are about until they have been in the ring with someone of quality who has a good CV.”
“By the amount of fights they have had, I had already beaten two former world champions.”
“Neither of them have fought a former world champion yet.”
“Time will tell.”
