Jessie Magdaleno gets low-blowed to death!
In the main event of the June 9 ESPN boxing telecast, former WBO super bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno (28-1, 18 KO’s) claimed an uncomfortable DQ win over Yenifel “The Lightening” Vicente (36-5-2, 28 KO’s).
Right from the beginning, the prizefight took on the rather lackluster pace that it would generally maintain for the following ten rounds.
In a nutshell, Vicente unsuccessfully chased the former champion around the ring all the while being peppered with strategic shots. Yet, even though the action was more or less bland throughout, there were definitely moments of excitement and awe.
For example, toward the conclusion of the first period, Magdaleno dropped The Lightening hard with a sneak counter-right hook.
Unfortunately for the former champion though, the most notorious and memorable element of the fight was the numerous low blows that Vicente landed. When the infraction really became part of the fight, in round four, Vicente was docked three points in the single period.
Then, in the very next round, he was dropped to the canvas again.
After the disastrous two rounds, the bout resumed being the rather monotonous affair that it was in the very beginning. Well, that was until the tenth and final period.
This is when Vicente, who was tragically behind on points, landed his final low blow of the night. The shot would force referee Robert Byrd’s hand to stop to disqualify him.
With the win, Magdaleno has made his successful transition into the super featherweight division. It will be interesting to see who he opts to take on in his next assignment.
