Arslanbek Makhmudov Is Beyond Foes Like Michael Wallisch

Heavyweight contender Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov (17-0, 15KO) picked up another win over a serviceable, low-level opponent in Michael Wallisch (23-6, 16KO). The bizarre first round was one for the history books. There were three knockdowns, a point deduction, and a fighter quitting in the corner on the stool. The 33-year-old Russian needs to step it up and fight better competition before getting a title shot.

Lion overpowered his opponent with bombs soon after the bell sounded. After landing two hard overhand rights and sending Wallisch to the canvas, Makhmudov received a point deducted for hitting behind the head. He scored a third knockdown that made Wallisch’s corner decide they had seen enough and stop the fight.

NO MORE SOFT TOUCHES

In 2019, Makhmudov was featured as a 3Kings Boxing prospect-to-watch prior to fighting past his prime former world champion Samuel Peters. Fast forward to now and Makhmudov is still feasting on these types of fighters. It is time for him to earn those #4 WBC and #5 WBA rankings.

His next fight needs to be against higher-tier opposition like former title challenger Otto Wallin, Martin Bakole, or Frank Sanchez. Top prospect Jared “Big Baby” Anderson has been calling out Makhmudov constantly. Despite Anderson not being ranked very high, his skill set and high praise in the boxing community make this a fight fans would welcome.

Going into 2023, Team Makhmudov should not be looking at low-caliber fighters anymore. Their fighter needs a real test before pursuing a title shot.
