Mikaela Mayer dares Alycia Baumgardner to mention her name
Unified junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer (16-0, 5ko) had a vested interest in watching divisional rivals newly crowned WBC champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner and former champion Terri “Belter” Harper do battle. Baumgardner shocked the entire U.K. crowd by stopping Harper. Afterwards, she immediately called for all the champions in the division. However, the unified champion was waiting for the mention of her name.
There is no secret that the boxing community had already punched their ticket on seeing Harper v Mayer when it a mini-tournament as announced to crown an undisputed champion. Mayer took care of her end by defeating IBF champion Maiva Hamadouche on November 6.
A NEW CHAMPION IS CROWNED, LET THE CALLOUTS BEGIN
Harper was supposed to unify with WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi, but things got put on hold when she suffered a hand injury. Team Harper decided to shake off the ring rust and test the hand against Baumgardner. This turned out to be a huge mistake.
The 27-year-old Ohio native was more than willing to travel into hostile territory and put a hush over the pro-U.K crowd. Her supreme confidence overshadowed the lack of experience on the championship level.
The Bomb was doing just that throwing power shots and ended the fight with a perfectly timed overhand right that had Harper out on her feet. Doing the post fight interview the WBC champion was asked if a unification with Mayer or Choi was next. Instead of picking out one name, she decided to send a message to them both.
“For anyone out there at 130, you know what time it is! And you know I am the top dog at 130, so you can come get this work!”
Watching like a hawk surveying the battlefield, Mayer caught the brash comments by Baumgardner. Next, the unified champion took to social media with an old Destiny’s Child song title:
