Michael Conlan planning a drop in weight?

3kingsboxing.com has learned that popular rising featherweight prospect Michael Conlan intends to drop down to the super bantamweight division. Having fought primarily at featherweight thus far in his young career, this move kind of makes you scratch your head.

In a division with the likes of the Josh Warrington, Gary Russell, Leo Santa Cruz and Shakur Stevenson a number of big fights seem inevitable. However, Conlan must’ve looked at the landscape of super bantamweight and fancied his chances there with the likes of Emmanuel Navarrete, Daniel Roman and Rey Vargas holding belts.

Whatever the thinking is, it appears he already has two potential opponents in mind. Namely, former WBO super bantamweight champion Isaac Dogboe and Genesis Servania. Dogboe is currently on a two-fight losing skid after back-to-back one-sided defeats to the hands of Navarrete. As for Servania, he’s coming off a loss to Carlos Castro back in February after winning three straight fights. Before that three-fight win-streak, he suffered his first career defeat at the hands of former WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez.

It’ll be interesting to see how this move plays out for Conlan. Will it be viewed as a genius move, or a move that could prove detrimental to him and his career? We shall find out real soon.

3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
