Jaime Munguia to makes fifth title defense against Patrick Allotey!
3kingsboxing has recently learned WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia (33-0, 26 KO’s) has agreed to face the little known Ghanaian fighter Patrick Allotey (40-3, 30 KO’s). If all goes accordingly, they will clash on September 14 on a card to be aired live on DAZN.
It already seems like a lifetime has passed since the undefeated Mexican secured the WBO belt by battering and bruising Sadam Ali en route to a fourth round stoppage. In May 2018, the impressive victory appeared to serve as Munguia’s coming out party.
In his first title defense against Liam Smith, Munguia continued to look like the next big thing in the division.
Nevertheless, since those two standout performances, Munguia has supplied increasingly underwhelming showings. In just over a years’ time, his outlook has changed quite a bit. He has gone from being regarded as a serious problem to being food for the other title holders.
This is why many speculate that the obscure Allotey was selected in the first place. Before a bout could be reached with the Ghanaian, there were talks of squaring off with Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin and Jessie Vargas. Despite entering into deep negotiations with Team Vargas, one and all of these potential prizefights crumbled to dust.
Even with this poor showing of late, expect Munguia to make short, destructive work of Allotey. True enough, Allotey has amassed thirty knockouts on his record. Yet, these stoppages have all come against inferior world level competition.
In fact, each and every time that Allotey has left his homeland to fight higher tiered opposition he has lost; twice by knockout. Nevertheless for what it is worth, the Ghanaian is ranked #12 and is currently the WBO Africa champion
Hopefully, for Team Munguia, this bout will go a long way to getting the once highly touted fighter back into a good grove.
