Donnie Nietes vacates WBO super flyweight title
In September 2018, Donnie Nietes and Aston Palicte battled to a tough draw for the vacant WBO super flyweight title. Many believed Nietes clearly won, which led to him getting another opportunity to fight for the same title in December against Kazuto Ioka.
By split decision, he obtained the vacant title which made him a four division champion.
Palicte was put in a WBO eliminator against José Martinez in January. After scoring a second-round knockout, the WBO immediately ordered the rematch between Nietes and Palicte.
As both sides vigorously negotiated for the rematch, time ultimately ran out and a purse bid was ordered for February 28. However, a cancellation came out of the blue due to Nietes vacating the title.
The reason given for his decision to vacate was due to his aspirations to fight bigger-named fighters; for presumably more money.
While no fighter has been specifically mentioned, it’s rumored he is expecting to face the winner of the Srisaket Sor Rungvisai vs Juan Francisco Estrada rematch!
As for Palicte, he’ll go on to fight for the vacant WBO title; possibly against Kazuto Ioka, the next highest rated contender.
Hopefully Nietes is able to secure a big name opponent or this decision could come back to haunt him.
