Anthony Olascuaga And Jonathan Gonzalez Disappointing Result

American reigning WBO flyweight champion Anthony “Princesa” Olascuaga battled Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. Olascuaga entered this contest riding a big wave of confidence. Following a respectable effort in defeat to then-unified junior flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji in April 2023, Princesa rebounded by winning the WBO title with a third-round knockout over Riko Kanu in July 2024.

Olascuaga faced Gonzalez, a veteran who has been a stalworth in the lower-weight divisions for several years. A former WBO champion at 108, Bomba was hungry to become a two-division world champion.

HE SHOULD HAVE TRIED TO CONTINUE

The fight got off to a quick start and ended with no winners. Princesa (7-1-1, 5KO) was coming forward, using the jab and footwork that put Gonzalez (28-3-2, 14KO) on the backfoot. He attacked the body early, hoping to slow down Bomba’s movement. It was clear his pressure, movement, and combination punches were a problem.

Gonzalez landed a solid two-punch combination before suffering a cut on the right eyebrow from a headbutt. Before the fight could resume, the referee asked him if he could see, and surprisingly, Gonzalez said no. This resulted in the fight being declared a no-contest in the first round.

Olascuaga looked extremely disappointed, and rightfully so. In this author’s opinion, the cut wasn’t that bad, plus Gonzalez didn’t even see if the corner was able to prevent it from being a factor. Being a former world champion he should have shown more heart in a championship bout.

The Californian shouldn’t look to do a rematch with Gonzalez but instead look towards a unification.
