Vergil Ortiz Jr. Says Doubting him Will be a Mistake!
It’s been nearly a year since unbeaten top welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs) has fought. In his last bout, he stopped former world title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas. In the aftermath, he was set to face Michael McKinson last March. However, he was forced to withdraw after being diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis.
Ortiz Jr. will be returning from a lengthy layoff due to a serious medical condition. It’s only natural for fans and peers to question how that will affect him moving forward. However, the top contender isn’t having any of it.
“There’s been a lot of people doubting me, and I feel like that’s really stupid of them. Because if there’s one thing I’m good at doing, and it’s probably the only thing I’m good at doing, is boxing. It’s not like it bothers me, but it does bother me that people are doubting me.”
It’s clear that while the questions of doubt irritate Ortiz Jr., they also seem to motivate him put on a terrific performance on August 6 against Michael McKinson (21-0, 2KOs). It’ll be interesting to see how he looks in his ring return. Hopefully he is fully recovered and has shaken off the effects of rhabdomyolysis.
