Rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr (16-0, 16KOs) continued his impressive KO streak against a very game Samuel Vargas (31-6-2, 14KOs).

The Texas native, known for his explosive power, displayed more than just power versus Vargas.

THE ACTION

Round one was a feel-out round as both men came out trying to establish a rhythm and Ortiz would display a solid jab. By round two, the aggressive Ortiz was consistently using his jab, while incorporating right hooks, uppercuts and left hooks. He would also show his ring IQ by side-stepping Vargas, creating more space for him to continue his offensive attack!

Round four was huge for Ortiz as he started to punish a very tough Vargas. Remarkable enough is that Vargas actually landed some very good shots of his own while against the ropes. He would catch and shoot right-hands to the head and body of Ortiz despite being under constant pressure.

THE END COMES BY WAY OF NON STOP PRESSURE!

As round seven began, it was clear that Ortiz had one thing in mind and that was a knockout victory! A big right-hand would start the downfall for Vargas as Ortiz was on him like a tick on a dog – unleashing thunderous right hooks to the head. It would be the right hooks to the body that would do the damage.

After nearly three minutes of a complete beat down, referee Jack Reiss would jump in and rightfully stop the fight.

At only 22 years old, it’s clear that Ortiz is the real deal and has major potential to become a huge star. With his consistent improvement and step up in competition, its only a matter of time until he’s fighting for a world title.
