Eduardo Ramirez knocks out Issac Avelar to secure interim WBA World Featherweight title
With his latest victory, Mexican boxer Eduardo “Zurdito” Ramirez (25-2-3, 12 KO’s) secured the interim WBA World Featherweight title. He accomplished this feat by knocking out Issac “Canelito” Avelar (17-3, 10 KO’s) in the third round of their dustup. Heading into this affair, Ramirez was ranked #1 by the WBA. Avelar was ranked #8 by the same sanctioning body. This latest victory stands as Zurdito’s third consecutive win by way of knockout. Unfortunately, Avelar is now 1-3 in his last three contests. Even worse, two of those losses have come by way of stoppage.
Looking to make a good impression on the big stage, both fighters came out fast and scored early. This made for lively, fun action right from the very start. Despite the willingness of both men to throw, it was clear that it was Ramirez who had the monopoly of technical skill. That skill would allow him to land a crunching right hook that discombobulated Avelar and sent him crumbling into the canvas. Even though he made it to his feet, it was clear that he was hurt badly and his legs were not under him. He was given the chance to continue but, moments later, the same right hook left him spilling into the ropes. This time, given his shabby fighting condition, the bout was quickly waved off and Zurdito was awarded the interim WBA Featherweight title.
