Welterweight Prospect Raul Curiel Revving Up for a Title Run

The tree of the sport of boxing is refreshed with young talent from time to time. This brings us to the story of welterweight prospect Raul “Cugar” Curiel (12-0, 10KO). Trained by world-renowned trainer Freddy Roach, Curiel is beginning to catch the eye of the boxing community.

THE JOURNEY FROM AMATEUR TO PROFESSIONAL

Curiel’s amateur background is part of the reason why there is so much high praise bestowed upon him. He won gold in the AIBA world championships to go along with the gold medal in the Olympic Cup Championships. Furthermore, he found success on the International level by winning the bronze medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games.

In 2015, the Mexican added more depth to his amateur resume by competing in the World Series of Boxing before representing Mexico in the 2016 Olympics. It was only natural that Golden Boy came knocking with a contract in 2017.

The 27-year-old power puncher hit the ground running in the professional ranks since making his debut in 2017. Moreover, his last seven opponents have not heard the sound of the final bell. In his last outing, Cugar laid waste to Brad Solomon with a left hook-uppercut combination in the second round.

During the post-fight interview, the North American Boxing Federation titlist said what a prospect should say.

“I want everyone in my weight class. I don’t fear anyone. I have a belt, so I just want the opportunity.”

IT IS TIME TO STEP IT UP

WBC #14 ranked Curiel is competing in the shark-infested waters of the welterweight division. In addition, he shows the same amount of poise, concentration, and calmness in the ring as fellow stablemate and top-rated welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Now that the engine is warmed up, it is time to shift the car into drive and leave the parking lot. Team Curiel should look to fight some of the lower-ranked fighters such as Jamal James, Mykal Fox, or Quentin Gomez for good fights. If you really want to test the young man’s heart, fights with Luke Santamaria or Florian Marku are good routes to take.

3Kings Boxing welcome Curiel into our Prospect Watch category.
