Kali Reis insists there is only respect for Jessica Camara

While it’s still unofficial at the moment, it appears that WBA and IBO world super lightweight champion Kali “KO Mequinonoag” Reis (18-7-1, 5 KO’s) has her next opponent mapped out. If all continues as planned, the 2-belt champion will quarrel with Jessica “The Cobra” Camara (8-2, 0 KO). At the moment, the date and venue have not been finalized.

When the two fistic-minded females do meet in the ring, it will be as a part of a wonderful tournament designed to crown the undisputed champion of the super lightweight division .One might think that as destined adversaries, and with so much on the line, that they would share some disdain for one another. Yet, Reis would probably surprise many by saying nothing was further from the truth. In fact, as she recently relieved to IFL TV, she and Camara are quite chummy!

“Yeah we went to breakfast after we did the interview! Yeah, we respect one another, and she is managed by Brain Cohen as well, so I have known her for quite some time now. I actually commentated one of her fights too. So when the bell rings it’s the business. So I am excited to fight. She is a good fighter, so it’s going to be exciting.”

THIS IS ABOUT ME!

At the same time though, Reis will not be thrown off by some giggles and flapjacks. As she acknowledged herself, once they hear the clang of the bell, there’ll be no thoughts outside of violence and domination. It’s been three years since she suffered her last loss to then undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus.

Now, Reis has the opportunity to become an undisputed champion herself. First though, in her bout with Camara, KO Mequinonoag will stage the first defense of her IBO title and the second defense of her WBA strap. Unsurprisingly, Reis is unwilling to take a backwards step in this situation because she feels this is her time in the spotlight.

“I mean everybody is fighting for their own reasons but, at the end of the day, we all have a common goal. But I think we are all fueled by our own personal reasons to win, so I think it’s going to make for a really good fight. No matter how you slice it, no matter who fights who. You know, I been here for a while, so it’s my time, that’s why I am the best!”

Only time will tell if this is truly meant to be Reis’ time on top, but it will be a fun time watching it all play out!
