Robert Easter Jr Escapes with a Split-Decision

Easter Jr remains unbeaten


In the co main event from the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY on Showtime Boxing, Robert Easter Jr. faced Javier Fortuna in a 12 round lightweight bout. The fight was scheduled to be for IBF Lightweight belt but Fortuna failed to make weight.

In the first round Easter and Fortuna both came out throwing with Easter landing the more affective punches. In the second Fortuna got a point taken away for hitting behind the head but seemed to land the better shots in the round.

In the third Fortuna was using his movement and awkward style trying to make it an ugly fight. In the fourth both men went back and forth as Fortuna’s movement seemed to be giving Easter Jr. some trouble. Fortuna landed some counter shots in the round. In the fifth round Easter Jr. came out and imposed his will on Fortuna walking him into the ropes and letting his hands go.

In the sixth round Easter Jr. had success early but got hurt by a perfect counter left hand late in the round. The seventh and eighth both men landed punches in what was shaping up to be a very close fight. By the ninth it seemed like the fight was on the table and Easter Jr decided to make it a phone booth fight.

Fortuna was able to counter very well going down the stretch and seemed to get the better of Easter Jr. on the inside. Both guys came out fought hard and left it all in the ring. However Robert Easter Jr. improved to 21-0 with 14 KOs winning a split decision (114-113 Fortuna, 114-113 Easter and 115-112 Easter) over Fortuna, 33-2-1,23KO. The announcement seemed to upset the crowd.

Afterwards Fortuna said he felt he won and wants a rematch!
