Robert Garcia Removed From Vergil Ortiz’s Corner Due To COVID-19 Complications
Robert Garcia, regarded by many as one of the elite trainers in all of boxing, will not be in the corner of Vergil Ortiz Jr (15-0, 15 KOs) for his July 24 fight against Samuel Vargas (31-5-2, 14 KOs) at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. The reason behind this move is a result of complications from a recent COVID-19 test.
According to Garcia, an initial test with Fantasy Springs disclosed that he has tested positive for the virus. However, during a follow-up test in Tustin, California, the results were negative.
Ortiz’s promoter, Golden Boy, along with Garcia released joint statements on social media explaining the situation. As the trainer stated, this is a precautionary measure. He and all parties involved are abiding by the new rules set by the California State Athletic Commission.
How will this affect Ortiz heading into his fight against Vargas? A young pup at 22 years old, he’s been under the tutelage of Garcia throughout his career. How will he adjust without the guidance of such a trusted voice with so much experience?
That being said, it must be noted that the youngster is one of the best prospects in all of boxing and a heavy favorite going into this fight against Vargas.
However, the absence of his teacher does add a little spice and a bit of intrigue. We will see how the kid tabbed by Golden Boy as the next great one will cope tonight at Fantasy Springs.
