Former 2x champ and famed trainer Roger Mayweather passes away!

In deeply sad news, it’s become public knowledge that former two division champ turned legendary trainer Roger “Black Mamba” Mayweather (59-13, 35 KO’s) has died at the age of 58. For those familiar with the Mayweather clan it’s been well known that Roger has been suffering the ill effects of declining health over the past number of years.

Now, after all his years of battling the Black Mamba has officially passed on. The actual cause of his demise if not yet known.

LIFE AS A BOXER

During his own professional career, Mayweather enjoyed quite a bit of success by successfully managing to become a two-time, two division world champion. First the Black Mamba captured the WBA super featherweight title by defeating Samuel Serrano and made two successful defenses before losing it.

Later he would secure the WBC junior lightweight title by toppling Rene Arredondo and went on to make four successful defenses of that title. Among his more notable opponents he faced: Vinny Pazienza, Kostya Tszyu, Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr (twice).

LIFE AFTER THE GLOVES

Following his retirement Mayweather remained a part of the boxing world by becoming a coach. By leaps and bounds his most famous fighter was his own nephew Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr (50-0, 27 KO’s).

The two would enjoy a wonderfully successful career together with the latter becoming a five division champion, four division lineal champion and one of the greatest fighters of all-time! While working with his nephew, Roger injected two now infamous quotes in the common boxing lexicon. With those being,

“Who you beat?”

and

“You don’t know shit about boxing!”

Roger’s health became a serious and undeniable issue well back in 2015 when he initially was forced to step away from his duties as Mayweather Jr’s chief second. Since that time he has gone through a number of unfortunate health incidents but remained largely out of the public eye.

The news of his death is particularly tragic given that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s children’s mother, Josie Harris, was found dead less than seven days ago. At this time the cause of her death is still undetermined.

3kingsboxing extend heart felt condolences to Mayweather Jr, his children and the extended Mayweather tribe as a whole.
