Haney vs Rolly Romero Should Replace Ryan Garcia Rematch

Former junior welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero’s (17-2, 13KO) victory over “King” Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20KO) may have killed the rematch with Devin “The Dream” Haney (32-0, 15KO).

Rolly was a huge underdog coming into the fight, as fans and pundits believed he wouldn’t make it past five rounds. The Nevada native scored a knockdown in the second round, putting Garcia in survival mode for the rest of the fight.

With each passing round, boxing fans had this feeling of a sinking ship as Romero pressed forward. Neither fighter did much, but Romero was the aggressor as the judges scored it 115-112 twice, and 118-109.

During the post-fight interview, Rolly endorsed the rematch.

“I think Devin and Ryan should get their rematch and make a big one.”

Well, the problem is no one is going to want to see it. Haney and Garcia both put on disappointing performances. The rematch has officially lost all of its luster. In this author’s opinion, Rolly should replace Garcia and face Haney sometime this year.
