Erick Rosa Bypasses Ortega to Unify with IBF Champ Daniel Valladares!
The sport of boxing is full of twists and turns. There have been many instances when a fight can be postponed or scratched without warning. Such is the case regarding the reigning WBA Regular minimumweight champion Erick Rosa (5-0, 1 KO). On July 15, the champ was scheduled to make the first defense of that title against Carlos Ortega, who is ranked twelfth by the WBA. That is no longer the case.
NOT SO FAST!
Hours before the scheduled bout was to take place, Rosa’s promoter, Shuan Boxing, announced that the match against Ortega was now off. Instead, the champ has agreed to an offer to face the newly crowned IBF minimumweight champ Daniel “Cejitas” Valladares (26-3-1, 15 KOs). The promotional outlet released the following statement on social media.
The defending champ is being highly touted in his native land, Dominican Republic. Despite having only five fights as an amateur, Rosa has developed quickly in the pro ranks. “Mini Pac-Man” was named 3Kings Boxing’s Prospect of the Year for 2021. In only his fourth professional fight, Rosa defeated tough veteran Vic Saluder by unanimous decision to win the WBA Regular title. Valladares is coming off a split-decision win over Rene Mark Cuatro to capture the IBF belt on July 2.
BOXING BUSINESS 101
Ortega is probably pissed about being dismissed. But if you’re Team Rosa, the decision makes sense from a business perspective. In truth, a fight against Valladares is higher-profile and profitable.
When presented with the opportunity for a unification match and it makes financial sense, you go with it. Simply put, that is what happened here with Team Rosa. To quote Nino Brown from New Jack City, “it’s always business, never personal.” Stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing with more details on when and where the Rosa – Valladares will take place.
