Andy Ruiz Speaks on a Potential Rematch with Joseph Parker

Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs) is a fighter hunting for another marquee, big-money fight. That opportunity could occur in a rematch against one-time WBO champion Joseph Parker (34-3, 23 KOs).

One of the most surprising results of 2023 was Parker’s easy decision victory over former Deontay Wilder on the December 23 Day of Reckoning fight card in Saudi Arabia. With that win, Parker revitalized his career and is a marketable name in the division.

Numerous current fighters were in attendance for that card, including Ruiz. Speaking to media outlet iFL TV, he disclosed that he was rooting for Parker to defeat Wilder. When asked whether he is interested in fighting Parker, Ruiz said he has his fingers crossed that it will happen.

“If they want it, I’m down . . . He beat me the first time. I wouldn’t mind running it back.”

WHY THE REMATCH IS POSSIBLE

They previously fought in December 2016 for the vacant WBO title. Parker won by a close decision. It was a contest that could’ve gone either way. Ruiz is currently rehabbing from shoulder surgery in November 2023. He said they would be healthy enough to face Parker in either May or June 2024.

It’s a reasonable option for both fighters. At this point in their careers, a rematch would be more significant and profitable than their previous encounter. The key will be if Parker’s handlers at Queensberry and Ruiz’s handlers over at PBC are interested in making the fight. If so, it’s a fight that fans should keep their eyes on.
