Andy Ruiz is firm in having the Anthony Joshua rematch in Mexico!
3kingsboxing has recently learned that Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz Jr (34-1, 23 KO’s) is pushing to stage his rematch with Anthony “AJ” Joshua (22-1, 21 KO’s) at the Estadio Azteca located in Mexico.
In lightening quick fashion after the first fight via knockout, Team Joshua announced that they would enact their immediate rematch clause.
Yet, outside of knowing that the bout would take place, ‘where’ and ‘when’ have remained a mystery.
In defeating AJ, Ruiz became the first Mexican heavyweight champion in the history of the sport.
Right from the beginning, the Destroyer indicated he would prefer the rematch take place in the states or in Mexico. Of course, Team Joshua wanted to take the meaningful prizefight back to their UK stronghold.
The unified champion expresses his sentiments in a recent interview with ESPN Mexico:
“I’d like that, it’d be good.
It’d be something of history because they have never fought [in the Azteca] two heavyweight world champions.”
If the match was to be held in Mexico it would make for one huge and historic event.
The Azteca, which boasts a 100,000 seat capacity, has only hosted a boxing event two times. The first occasion was when featherweight champion Vicente Saldivar defeated Howard Winstone in 1967.
The second match saw then WBC super lightweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez topple Greg Haugen in 1993. This fight commands the record for the largest live gate in boxing history.
On February 20, 1993, 132,274 boxing fans packed into the Azteca to witness Chavez’s one-sided thumping.
Ruiz has ambitions to make some of his own Mexican history!
