Canelo Alvarez Eyeing a Showdown with Jermall Charlo Next
According to ESPN, undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KO’s) is nearing completion for a deal to face with WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (32-0, 22 KO’s). Prior to this unconfirmed rumor, it was revealed that Team Canelo was looking to make a deal with WBC cruiserweight champion Badou “The Ripper” Jack (28-3-3, 17 KO’s).
Yet while Jack is a solid fighter and a champion, this potential match-up did not titillate the boxing world in the least. Without question, a duel versus Charlo would be a much more appealing showdown. There is also a backstory here that is absent with Jack. This is due to the fact that Hit Man has been calling for a dust-up with the redhead for years. Now would be an ideal time for both fighters to make this bout a reality.
IT’S THE RIGHT TIME
At the current moment, neither Charlo nor Canelo are shining all that brightly. For his part, Hit Man has been on the shelf and inactive for a solid two years. Even worse, Jermall Charlo, unlike his undisputed super welterweight brother Jermell Charlo, has remained under constant fire about his resume. Most in the boxing world feel that for the talent he possesses, Hit Man is not facing top competition.
Similarly, Canelo has provided a number of lackluster fights since his second official professional loss suffered to Dmitry Bivol. After the match with Bivol, Alvarez opted to fight Gennady Golovkin in a match that no one was asking for. To follow that up, the redhead took on John Ryder in a prizefight that was nearly universally dismissed by casuals, hardcore fans and boxing insiders alike. The general consensus was that Ryder did not possess the skill to hang with Canelo.
If Canelo were to dance with Charlo, there will not be much room for complaining available. Yet, before we get all worked up into a lather, let’s see what Team Canelo ultimately does in this situation.
