Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez Trilogy Coming Sooner Than Later?

Social media is buzzing in a frenzy after rumoring about the long-anticipated trilogy between WBA Super flyweight champion “El Gallo” Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3, 28KOs) and multi-divisional champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (51-3, 41KOs) could be happening next.

According to source TN8 Nicaragua, Estrada will forgo fighting WBA Regular champion Joshua Franco to fight rival Gonzalez sometime in September or October.

ROADBLOCKS TO THE TRILOGY

El Gallo captured the WBC title in a rematch against Sor Rungvisai in 2019. In 2021, he wrestled away the WBA title from Chocolatito in a controversial unification rematch. Afterward, he was elevated to Franchise status by the WBC to allow for the trilogy, which was targeted for October 2021.

Fans would rejoice when the news broke that their showdown would take place on March 5, 2022. However, Estrada had to pull out of the due illness. Adding even more bad news to the mix, the WBA ordered El Gallo to consolidate their title with Franco. This took the air out of the balloon as the conversation about the trilogy had been halted.

Gonzalez carried on with the fight date of March 5, but against WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez. The Nicaraguan put on a master class boxing display, proving he is still an elite level fighter. Fans, after witnessing that performance, wanted to see the trilogy even more.

THE FANS HAVE SPOKEN

At the writing of this article, it is unclear if the WBA will allow Estrada to keep the title to be a part of the trilogy or strip him of the belt.

A fight of this magnitude stands on its own merit, and fans will come out in droves to see this legacy event regardless of a belt possibly not being on the line.
