Gary Russell Jr still pursuing bout with Terence Crawford

Just when you thought the flames of conflict had died down, WBC world featherweight champion “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr. (31-1, 18 KO’s) is back at it! After recently reminiscing on an amateur squabble that he had with WBO world welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (36-0, 27 KO’s), a tremendous ruckus was stirred up.

Along with Bud and Russell, several other boxers who witnessed the event got involved. Virtually all other accounts co-signed Crawford’s version of the skirmish. Furthermore, no one thought it was a good idea for Mr. to pursue a present-day prizefight with the laid-back Nebraskan. Clearly, the opinion of the masses don’t mean a thing to Russell.

WHERE YOU AT?

Even though they are separated by four division jumps, Russell is ready to swear on a stack of ten Bibles that he’ll fight Crawford anywhere, any time. For his part, Bud has plainly stated that a fight between them is the definition of a pointless bout. Yet, let him tell it, he is still looking for showdown to take place. Russell had this to say in a video he posted over social media:

“Let the fans know what it really is, I will fuck Terence Crawford up! As a matter of fact, just to let you know how serious I am, I already got off the phone with Al [Haymon] a couple days ago and we in negotiations right now. To the fans that don’t know, we definitely reached out to Bud and them and we just waiting back on a response. So this shit is going down on my end!”

WISHFUL THINKING

It makes for fun headlines and great water cooler chatter. However, there is next to no chance that this fight will take place. Crawford already catches hell for his resume at welterweight while facing welterweights. If Bud penned a bout with Russell, he’d likely be heckled out of the sport. Yet again, it’s still an enjoyable pastime topic.
